Welcome to the community web site for the town and parish of St Columb Major, where the game of hurling with the silver ball is played at Shrovetide
We are very proud of our heritage, our ancient market town with its magnificent 14th century parish church, and especially of the game of hurling. On Shrove Tuesday and the following Saturday week the townsmen and the countrymen vie with one another for the honour of winning the silver ball, a centuries old tradition which is enthusiastically maintained by successive generations.

4 June 2008 The new Children's Centre on the primary school site was officially opened by Jill Murphy, award winning and internationally acclaimed children's book writer, at a special ceremony in June.
